The family of a woman murdered in Tyrone 50 years ago say they believe her killer is still alive and could still be brought to justice, reports RTE.

Marion Beatty, 18, was found dead on March 31, 1973, in a quarry near a ball she had attended.

She was seen leaving a nearby ballroom with a man, reports RTE.

Her body was discovered when she failed to meet her brother in Portadown for a ride home.

There were about 200 people at the ball, and the Beatty family believes some of them hold the key to the case.

They are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The Police Ombudsman Office is investigating the matter after the family questioned the level of the original RUC investigation, reports RTE.

The Ombudsman’s Office will soon publish its report.

Ms Beattie’s cousin Colette Toman said the family wanted the investigation to be dropped from the PSNI’s Legacy Division which investigates historical murders.

They want to re-open this as an active case and are calling on PSNI chief Simon Byrne to take action.

“After 50 years we deserve answers as to why Marian’s investigation was flawed from the very beginning and what steps will now be taken to rectify this,” reports RTE.
