Wham’s Last Christmas finally reaches UK #1 after 36 years




Wham’s Christmas classic “Last Christmas” has finally reached the top of the UK rankings after close to 40 years. The Christmas hit is not only the first number one in the official singles table in 2021, but has also broken a record.

Last Christmas, is the longest running hit to reach #1 after 36 years, beating Tony Christie (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, who took 33 years and four months to reach the top of the rankings’ charts in March 2005.

The epic tune that has been a hit every Chrismtas since it was first released in December 1984 by the pop duo George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. It has been the UK’s best-selling single to date, reaching number one with 1.9 million sales. In the year of its release, Last Christmas spent five weeks in second place and missed number one for Christmas thanks to Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas.
