What a coincidence: Trump gets elected and Zelensky now says he wants an end to the Ukraine war in 2025

As both nations get ready for Donald Trump’s return to the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that his country wants to conclude the war with Russia “diplomatically” next year, reports RTE.

The third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would fall in February 2025, with Russian forces making progress against Kyiv’s outnumbered and outgunned military in recent months.

Given that the Republican president-elect has been dismissive of US military assistance to Kyiv, the possibility of Mr. Trump regaining control of the United States next year has sparked concerns about the conflict’s future, reports RTE.

According to Mr. Zelensky, after Mr. Trump is elected president, the conflict will conclude “sooner” than it otherwise would have.

Meanwhile, Western authorities claim that North Korea, a crucial friend of the Kremlin, has deployed hundreds of its soldiers to assist Moscow in fending off a Ukrainian onslaught occurring in the Kursk area of Russia’s border, reports RTE.

A day after Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first phone conversation with a prominent Western leader in over two years, the Ukrainian leader was chatting to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who made the contact in defiance of Kyiv’s protests.

“For our part, we must do everything we can to ensure that this war ends next year. We have to end it by diplomatic means,” Mr Zelensky said in an interview with Ukrainian radio. “And this, I think, is very important,” reports RTE.

Russia and Ukraine have not held any substantive negotiations, but the reelection of Donald Trump has cast doubt on the future of the bloody conflict since the Republican has made repeated promises to reach a speedy agreement to stop the war.

“We have to understand what the Russians want,” Mr Zelensky said, reports RTE.

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, has stated that he will only engage in negotiations with Ukraine if the Ukrainians cede land that Russia controls.

According to the Kremlin, he reiterated that demand to Mr. Scholz over the phone, reports RTE.

Mr. Putin’s demands have been turned down by the Ukrainian government.

Russia’s invasion has caused shockwaves far beyond the European continent, as North Korea has launched troops into the worst combat on European land since World War II, reports RTE.
