Since its introduction last month, a truck cab used by gardaí to crack down on reckless driving has assisted in the detection of over 100 traffic crimes, reports RTE.
An Garda Síochána bought the tractor cab heavy goods truck as part of their campaign to stop distracted and irresponsible driving as well as HGV drivers’ failure to buckle up.
As part of Operation Iompar, the new road safety effort was implemented in August to help combat incorrect driving conduct.
A qualified garda is operating the unmarked lorry cab, which has blue flashing lights and no speed restriction removed, reports RTE.
It will be utilised on the nation’s motorway and dual-carriageway networks.
In addition to looking into other HGV cabs, the higher view point allows the second observer garda to peer down into automobiles and vans.
Depending on the situation, a garda patrol car or an unmarked garda car called the interceptor vehicle follows the garda lorry cab a short distance behind during a patrol, reports RTE.
Should any infractions be identified, the interceptor vehicle receives the information, and the gardaí pull over the violating drivers.
Numerous drivers have received fines and penalty points thus far for a variety of moving violations, most notably using a cell phone while driving and failing to buckle up.
Yesterday, in only 45 minutes, two drivers in the vehicle were observed by gardaí breaching traffic laws, reports RTE.
A van driver was stopped and given a Fixed Charge Notice after it was seen that he was texting while operating a vehicle on the eastbound carriageway of the N7 at Citywest in Dublin.
In the taxi, there was Garda Des Griffin from the Garda Roads Policing Unit on observation duty.
“We drove passed him, I looked out and his phone was on his leg and he was reading a text or texting at the same time, and he was looking up and down while driving, so he could not observe the road or anyone around him, and he could have caused a crash,” reports RTE.
