As many people guessed, Irish water have announced that there will be NO penalties attached to those who do not register to the water company by midnight tonight, but they have also stated that those who do not register may face a higher charge. This comes after Irish Water stated that households who fail to register by midnight will be faced with a default charge of €260.

Speaking on RTÉ’s today with Sean O’Rourke spokesperson for Irish Water, Elizabeth Arnett said if people fail to confirm their details Irish Water will make an assumption that they are on a standard charge of €260.

Ms Arnett also stated that households which fail to register will not be eligible to apply to the Department of Social Protection for the €100 Water Conservation Grant. However, despite that, the Department of Environment has confirmed that another deadline will be put in place so households will be able to avail of the €100 grant.

So far, over 1 million people have returned forms (not all customers), leaving 835,000 households still left to register.  Irish Water says it will continue to accept forms after the deadline tonight but that homes run the risk of not being charged accurately when the first bills arrive in April.
