The White House has launched a strong counter-attack against a harsh special counsel report that portrayed Joe Biden as an elderly and forgetful leader. The report was characterized as a political smear campaign in an election year, reports RTE.
Vice President Kamala Harris has called the report “politically motivated,” while White House spokesman Ian Sams criticized it as “gratuitous and inappropriate,” questioning its impartiality.
During his meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in the Oval Office for Ukraine talks, President Biden refused to answer any questions about the report. However, the night before, he had responded furiously to the report’s findings, reports RTE.
The investigation cleared the 81-year-old Democrat of illegally retaining classified documents in his home and garage. However, the report also described him as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
As President Biden bids for re-election in November, most likely against Republican Donald Trump, his supporters and aides are rushing to defend him on an issue he has long been vulnerable on.
“The way that the president’s demeanour in that report was characterised could not be more wrong on the facts and (was) clearly politically motivated,” Ms Harris said when asked about the report, reports RTE.
