WHO accused of fear-mongering as they warn against herd immunity approach to coranavirus

In a stark warning that many social media users claim is nothing short of “fear-mongering-, the World Health Organisation has stated that Covid-19 is still far too high to contain the pandemic through herd immunity, ABC reports.

To contain the economic and social devastation wrought by social distancing measures, many countries have been considering a herd immunity approach going forward. This would entail loosening restrictions in order to spike the virus numbers, rather than suppress them through lockdown measures, with the aim that cases would drop as populations become immune.

The UK, Sweden, and the Netherlands were criticised by experts for adopting this approach, with one senior health official quoted by ABC as stating that herd immunity is ‘not a solution we should be looking to’.

According to the most recent figures, there have been 22 million cases and 800 thousand deaths from Coronavirus worldwide.
