It’s the question that’s beginning to be asked around the world, should very small children be vaccinated against covid, or should the youngest age of vaccination remain at 12 years of age.

The HSE say that at the moment, there are no plans to vaccinate children younger than 12, however a leading health expert has said Ireland’s next step in the vaccination programme could involve protecting 5 to 11 year olds.

According to LMFM, Professor Anthony Staines of DCU has said that those of school going age returning to class should be protected.

Professor Staines has said that is likely that approval may be sought for vaccination in younger children and it could be matter of weeks before an application is submitted pending ongoing trial results.

Staines comments come as BioNtech’s Chief Medical Officer has confirmed to Der Spiegal that trials in younger children are ongoing and results could be submitted in a number of weeks.
