The National Hurling and Camogie Centre in Waterford is set to cost millions more than planned to complete according to documents presented to an Oireachtas committee.

Construction began over 8 years ago into a new state of the art sports campus at Waterford Institute of Education which was estimated to cost €9.7m, but figures now reveal the cost of the project is closer to €15m.

The developments plans and the initial phase’s were completed at a cost of eight and a half million euro, however complications arose in phase three of the project, which was to include a multi-purpose sports arena which would be home to the National Hurling and Camogie Centre.

However due to financial issues the building is still lying empty, having not been completed and is now a distressed asset.

Documents prepared for the Oireachtas Committee of Public Accounts now show that though €7.3m has been spent on the project to date, with the new estimates, another €7.5m will be needed to finish it now.
