With sea temperatures reaching their highest in September, poisonous Portuguese Man O’War spotted off Cork coastline

Cork County Council have issued warnings on Facebook posts, with reports of Portuguese Man o’War sightings on Owenahincha Beach, Garrettstown Beach, and Garrylucas Beach, White Strand.

The Portuguese man o’ war (Physalia physalis), isn’t technically a jelly fish. It’s marine hydrozoan found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

It has numerous venomous microscopic nematocysts which deliver a painful sting powerful enough to kill fish, and has been known to occasionally kill humans.

Echolive reports that the Man O’War creatures “often float in groups of up to 1,000 and appear in Irish waters if south-westerly breezes prevail and carry them from their tropical habitats.
