A 25-year-old woman who sued Dublin’s National Maternity Hospital over the circumstances of her birth has settled a claim in the High Court for €8.25million.
RTE reports that lawyers for Rachel Barry, who has spastic cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, told the High Court that her brain injury could have been prevented if her mother had been properly monitored and treated.
The national broadcaster reports that the court heard that Finola Barry was admitted to Midlands Regional Hospital on April 4, 1997 when she was 30 weeks and two days pregnant.
She suffered a spontaneous rupture of her membranes and was transferred to National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, Dublin.
