Wonder why? New electric car sales continue to plummet – down 26% on last year

Compared to previous year, sales of electric cars have decreased by 25.7%, while the market for new cars as a whole has decreased by just 1.4% as of September 30, reports Breaking News.

As of right now, 118,926 new automobiles have been sold in the UK, according to the most recent data from The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). Of them, 16,133 were completely electric automobiles, accounting up 13.8 per cent of the market. Compared to the previous year, when EVs made up more than 18% of new car sales, it represents a decrease.

On the other hand, sales of normal hybrid vehicles have increased by 12% this year; as of the end of September, there had been 26,079 new registrations, accounting for almost 22% of the market. In a similar vein, plug-in hybrid sales have increased and currently represent 10% of overall sales with 11,766 registrations, reports Breaking News.

With 36,339 registrations, petrol continues to be the most popular choice among Irish consumers, followed by diesel with 26,947.

“Restoring and expanding EV supports, along with investing in a dependable charging infrastructure, can help regain lost momentum in the electric vehicle project,” stated Brian Cooke, director general of SIMI. The industry is still dedicated to helping with the electrification transition,” reports Breaking News.

With 17,043 registrations, Toyota continues to be the best-selling brand of new cars, surpassing Volkswagen (13.226), Skoda (11.917), Hyundai (11.220), and Kia (8,900). With 5,270 sales this year, Audi has risen to sixth place overall, and with 4,300 registrations, BMW has also entered the top 10. In terms of new vehicle sales so far this year, both luxury brands are currently ahead of mainstream brands like Ford, Renault, and Opel.

With 5,207 sales, the Hyundai Tucson is the best-selling new car in Ireland, surpassing the Skoda Octavia (4,307) and Kia Sportage (3,777), reports Breaking News.
