Tesla is showcasing its fully autonomous driving technology through trials on public roads in the UK, reports Breaking News.
The electric car maker released two videos featuring a Model 3 navigating both central London and the complex Magic Roundabout in Swindon, with the driver’s hands off the wheel.
In a three-minute video filmed in London, the car is seen managing roadworks and passing notable locations including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Downing Street, reports Breaking News.
According to Tesla, the Model 3 featured in the clips uses the same hardware as those currently available to customers, but is running software that is only accessible to Tesla engineers at this time.
The company is currently seeking approval from UK regulators to deploy its unsupervised full self-driving system in the country.
Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, a motoring research organisation, said: “It is a mistake to think that driverless technology won’t be able to cope with the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of the UKs roads – hats off to anyone, or anything, that can successfully negotiate the Magic Roundabout,” reports Breaking News.
“The challenge for the regulatory authorities – and the nagging worry in the minds of potential passengers – is how to be sure that these vehicles can cope in every combination of circumstances they might encounter, including those where the human drivers around them might be less inclined to stick to the rules. The regulatory test self-driving vehicles need to pass is not whether they can cope with our roads on a given day, it is whether they can cope every day in every combination of circumstances they might encounter,” reports Breaking News.
On Monday, the Government launched a consultation on what rules self-driving taxis should have to meet in future.
