Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has once again stated that the party is still weighing its options regarding this year’s presidential election and expects to reach a decision in the coming weeks, reports RTE.
She said that a process is currently ongoing and that more work remains to be done, reports RTE.
When asked if she herself might be a candidate, Ms McDonald said “all options are on the table”.
Regarding the possibility of supporting Independent TD Catherine Connolly, Ms McDonald said the party has not yet decided whether it will put forward its own candidate or endorse someone else, and added “good luck to her”, reports RTE.
Ms Connolly has confirmed that she will officially announce her presidential bid next week and said the campaign is already “taking shape”.
She made her remarks during a Sinn Féin rally held in central Dublin, which was promoted as a protest to “save” the GPO, reports RTE.
Ms McDonald said that the historic site should not be turned into a retail space.
In the meantime, People Before Profit’s steering committee has agreed to support Ms Connolly’s candidacy for President, reports RTE.
“Catherine Connolly is a popular, principled figure on the left and we are pleased that she has put herself forward as a candidate. We welcome that the Social Democrats have also given their support to Catherine and we urge others on the left to join her campaign,” TD Paul Murphy said, reports RTE.
“We believe that an imaginative campaign in support of Catherine, articulating a radical, progressive vision, and with the energetic backing of the parties of the left, can build a powerful momentum to achieve an important victory,” reports RTE.
