Intending on heading to the US? Well it looks like it is about to get a whole lot cheaper as the Icelandic airline WOW is set to offer cut- price rates for transatlantic flights to the US for as little as €149.

The Icelandic airline announced that they will be the first low-cost airline to fly to the States from Dublin. The new fares will start in October with passengers being able to avail of €149 one way flights including taxes, to Boston and Washington. WOW say that flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, flying from Dublin to Reykjavik and then on to North America.

WOW Air CEO Skúli Mogensen made a statement regarding the news saying: “We are thrilled to be able to offer our WOW prices for Irish passengers travelling between Dublin and North America. “Our aim is to transform low-cost transatlantic flights and make travel to the US affordable for everybody.”

This latest news will surely come as a blow to rival airlines such as Ryanair as they plan to offer transatlantic fares from as little as €10 within 10 years. However Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary recently admitted that the plans were long from becoming a reality because of the lack of available long haul aircraft. Mr O’Leary said: “Unless we can secure a fleet of low-cost aircraft, frankly, the business doesn’t get off the ground. “The future is very hard to foretell, it certainly is unlikely to happen within the next five years, but I’d be disappointed if it doesn’t happen within the period, maybe, five to 10 years.”

Meanwhile the new fares set out by WOW will be almost half the price of a flight with Aer Lingus, who reportedly charge €621 for a return trip to Boston.
