The stolen 190x95cm (75×37 inches) section of the gate contains the Nazi slogan ‘Arbeit mach frei’ (Work sets you free). Officials say that the thief had to climb an outer gate to get to the camp’s entrance where the sign stood.
A similar robbery occurred in the Auschwitz death camp in December 2009. The same sign was taken from the camp’s gate, but was recovered shortly afterwards.
