A World War 1 memorial was unveiled in Trinity College Dublin this morning to commemorate the 471 students, staff and alumni of the college who tragically lost their lives.

Standing at the Hall of Honour, at the entrance of the 1937 Reading Room in the college’s Front Square, the piece is a sculpture by artist Stephen Burke.

Nearly a third of the 3000 personnel were students, staff or graduates of medicine.

Family members of the deceased attended the ceremony today, along with ambassadors from the countries where they died.

Pro-Chancellor Professor Dermot McAleese officially unveiled the memorial stone and the ceremony included addresses by Provost Patrick Pendergast and Professor Ivana Bacik, Reid Professor of Law and a member of Seanad Éireann.

The three then lay a wreath at the memorial stone.

This was followed by a minute’s silence and a lament played on the Uilleann pipes.
