Yeah, we’ll catch them – Ryanair increases bonuses for catching passengers with oversized bags

Ryanair is preparing to increase bonuses for staff members who identify travelers attempting to bring oversized baggage on board, reports Breaking News.

The airline’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, stated that he makes “absolutely no apology” for stopping those who are “scamming the system”.

During a press event in central London, Mr O’Leary told journalists that the airline is expected to raise the bonus for gate staff who catch oversized bags from €1.50 to €2.50 per item starting in November, reports Breaking News.

The monthly limit of €80 on such bonuses is also expected to be removed.

Ryanair enforces strict baggage policies, and passengers who arrive at the gate with a bag that exceeds size limits are charged to have it placed in the hold.

Lowest-priced fares include only one small bag that must fit under the seat ahead, reports Breaking News.

Mr O’Leary said: “I make absolutely no apology for it whatsoever. I want our ground handling people to be catching people who are scamming the system,” reports Breaking News.

He added: “I am still mystified by the number of people with rucksacks who still think they’re going to get through the gate and we won’t notice the rucksack. We will, and you will be paying for the rucksack. You’re not getting on if it doesn’t fit,” reports Breaking News.

Mr O’Leary noted that approximately 200,000 travelers each year are charged extra baggage fees at the gate, meaning “we have more work to do to get rid of them”.

The airline flew 200 million passengers during the 12 months ending in March.

Mr O’Leary added: “We want everybody to comply with the rules. If you comply with the rules, no issues. We are running a very efficient, very affordable, very low-cost airline, and we’re not letting anybody get in the way,” reports Breaking News.
