A new hospital has officially opened in Spain dedicated solely to treating patients on long public waiting lists in Ireland under a major new healthcare contract.
Patients are being treated in accordance with the EU’s cross-border directive, which means that the Health Service Executive will cover the cost of treatment up to what it would cost them in Ireland.
The new 64-bed hospital is the HCB Dénia Hospital on the Costa Blanca, Alicante.
Initially, around 1,500 Irish patients will undergo scheduled surgeries at the facility each year.
It’s understood that the Irish patients will have to pay their own way to Spain and for their own accommodation so that they can get their medical treatment.
