British comedian Ricky Gervais’ fifth, and supposedly final, hosting of the Golden Globes has sent shockwaves through Hollywood after the irreverent funny man mercilessly mocked the “woke” zeitgeist permeating celebrity culture.
Gervais provoked gasps at one stage after he made a quip about child sex trafficking billionaire Jeffery Epstein not having killed himself before telling the audience of Hollywood actors to “shut up” and that he doesn’t care he was their friend.
He went on to joke that they had to fly to Hollywood on their own just, referencing the fact that numerous Hollywood celebrities are said to have flown on Epstein’s so-called “Lolita Express” jet.
A joke about the film Birdbox left the usually self-adulating celebrities particularly peeved when Gervais referenced the film, saying a movie in which to survive you have to pretend you can’t see anything. This, Gervais said, was like working for Harvey Weinstein. He then went on to rebuke the shocked audience of Hollywood elites, telling them that “they did it”- not him’.
However, the most headline grabbing and applauded remarks from Gervais was when he told the actors that they had no right to lecture people and that “most of them had spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg”.
Gervais urged winning actors to simply “collect their award, thank their agent and their God and then f**k off!”.
These comments were met with visible shock from many of the entertainment elite gathered for the 77th Annual Golden Globes awards.
