Young boy tragically dies on beach after sand tunnel he built collapses on him

A 17-yr-old boy has sadly died in Italy following a beach accident where a hole he was digging collapsed and buried him, reports The Mirror.

According to The Mirror, the teenager—identified only as Riccardo—was vacationing with his family in Montalto di Castro when the tragic incident took place on a local beach.

Reports indicate that Riccardo, along with his younger siblings aged eight and three, had dug a hole around one and a half metres deep while their father was asleep nearby, reports The Mirror.

After a while, the younger children left their brother to continue digging alone. By 3pm, the family began to worry when they could no longer find Riccardo and started searching.

Swimmers, lifeguards, and Riccardo’s father began digging with their bare hands in the sand in a desperate effort to locate him as they waited for emergency responders, reports The Mirror.

Police and an air ambulance quickly arrived at the scene to support the rescue attempt, but tragically, the teenager was declared dead at the site.

An eyewitness who had been swimming at the coast told the local news: “He had built a tunnel. He wanted to enter from one side and exit from the other. But as he passed through, when he reached the centre, everything collapsed and the hole was completely covered. You couldn’t see anything anymore, you could have walked right through it and not noticed a thing,” reports The Mirror.

The local mayor Emanuela Socciarelli told reporters: “A tragedy that has left us all shocked. It’s unthinkable that a young man could lose his life in this way. I want to offer my sincere condolences to this family, to whom we are all truly deeply connected,” reports The Mirror.
