The young girl who was badly wounded in the knife attack at Dublin’s Parnell Square has now returned to full-time schooling, according to her family, reports Breaking News.
In a post shared on a GoFundMe campaign, the family clarified that the girl is not enrolled in mainstream schooling and expressed deep appreciation for the staff at the institution, saying they have “gone above and beyond” for her.
The attack, which took place on Parnell Square East on November 23rd, 2023, also left two other children and a childcare worker injured, reports Breaking News.
The girl, now six years old, was five at the time of the incident and suffered critical injuries, requiring several weeks in a paediatric intensive care unit.
She remained in hospital for over 370 days before finally returning home.
Earlier in the year, her condition was described as “thriving,” and it was noted that she has no memory of the attack that occurred in November 2023, reports Breaking News.
In March, her family shared that she had begun expressing herself on “a whole new level,” reports Breaking News.
In an update posted on Thursday, her family said: “She has been attending school full-time. She is not attending mainstream school, just to clarify.
“The staff at this very special institution have gone above and beyond [in our eyes] to make our little girl feel part of the group, even after joining mid-school year. We are forever grateful to the love and dedication everyone has shown her. She has been attempting different sounds [some nasal ones], and moving her arms with more intent. Her happiness is infectious. We have had some challenging days; we all go through them, even if we wouldn’t like a six-year-old to have to. As summer approaches, we are so happy to be able to spend it at home, hoping to spend days outdoors, smell the warm air, enjoy the sun and the sea,” reports Breaking News.
A man has been formally charged in connection with the incident, and his case is currently being handled in a Dublin court.
Riad Bouchaker (50), who has no fixed address, faces charges of attempting to murder two girls and a boy, reports Breaking News.
He is also accused of inflicting serious harm on a childcare worker.
Additional charges include three counts of assault causing harm and possession and production of a knife, reports Breaking News.
