Young woman remains seriously injured in shark attack at Sydney beach

A woman has been seriously injured in a shark attack at a Sydney beach, authorities confirmed, in the latest incident in a recent spate of shark attacks off Australia’s coastline.

Emergency services were called to Coogee Beach in the east of Sydney after reports that a swimmer had been bitten, police said in a statement, reports RTE.

“The woman was pulled from the water by members of the public who commenced first aid,” police said, adding that the victim suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg.

The woman, who is in her 30s, was taken by road to hospital, police confirmed, reports RTE.

Coogee Beach and two nearby beaches were closed in the aftermath of the attack.

A week earlier, a man died after being attacked by a shark while fishing off the coast of Western Australia state, in the latest fatal incident, reports RTE.

Last month, a 39-year-old man died after being attacked while fishing on Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef.

Ten days prior to that, a 38-year-old was fatally mauled off an island near Perth in Western Australia, reports RTE.

Dozens of beaches along Australia’s east coast, including in Sydney, were also closed in January after four shark attacks occurred within two days.

Those followed heavy rainfall that created murky water conditions, attracting sharks while reducing their visibility, reports RTE.

Most shark attacks occur along the east and southeast seaboard of Australia, which records an average of around 20 such incidents per year, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
