YouTube has introduced a new feature giving parents the ability to set time limits or completely disable the YouTube Shorts feed within supervised accounts.
Within the YouTube app’s family centre, parents can access their child’s account and choose the ‘time management’ option, reports RTE.
From there, they can decide how much time is allowed on Shorts each day, including setting the limit to zero minutes.
Once a child reaches the daily cap, a notification appears and they are blocked from continuing to scroll through Shorts for the rest of the day, reports RTE.
“Today, parents in Ireland and across Europe can set the amount of time their teens spend on Shorts, including to zero minutes per day – an industry-first parental control,” said Dr Garth Graham, Global Head of YouTube Health, reports RTE.
“We believe parents should be in the driver’s seat and the new Shorts feed limit helps them to tailor their family’s viewing experience,” Dr Graham said, reports RTE.
Last month, a jury in California ruled that YouTube’s parent company Google, along with Meta, were responsible for creating platforms deemed addictive.
Both firms stated they disagreed with the ruling and confirmed they intend to appeal, reports RTE.
Following the decision, a Google spokesperson said the case misrepresented YouTube.
“which is a responsibly built streaming platform, not a social media site,” the spokesperson said, reports RTE.
