Zelensky worried that President-Elect Trump will pull the financial plug

Despite the fact that Donald Trump’s election victory cast doubt on the future of Ukraine’s fight against Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has lavished admiration on him, reports RTE.

As stronger and better-equipped Russian soldiers approach in strategic areas of the eastern frontier, which has seen some of the bloodiest combat since Moscow’s invasion in February 2022, Ukraine’s territorial losses have escalated in recent months.

Without providing an explanation, Mr. Trump has pledged to put an end to the conflict before he takes office in January and has attacked the extent of US assistance for Ukraine’s military effort, reports RTE.

Soon after Trump declared victory, Mr. Zelensky said that he was looking forward to a “era of a strong United States of America under President Trump’s decisive leadership.”

Given the ongoing ambiguity around the implications of a Trump presidency for the war, the message’s rapidity seemed to be intended to forge connections with the next government in Washington as soon as possible, reports RTE.

According to the UN Secretary-General, the international organisation is “ready to work constructively” with the Trump administration.

“I commend the people of the United States of America for their active participation in the democratic process… The United Nations stands ready to work constructively with the incoming administration to address the dramatic challenges our world is facing,” Antonio Guterres said, reports RTE.

NATO leader Mark Rutte thanked Mr. Trump and stated that the alliance will remain “strong” as a result of his return to office.

“His leadership will again be key to keeping our Alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength through NATO,” Mr Rutte said in a statement, reports RTE.

According to Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, the US and the EU are “more than just allies.”

“I warmly congratulate Donald J Trump. The EU and the US are more than just allies. We are bound by a true partnership between our people, uniting 800 million citizens. So let’s work together on a strong transatlantic agenda that keeps delivering for them”, she said in a post on X, reports RTE.

“Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback! Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge victory!” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, reports RTE.
