The Florida Peninsula is a popular enough destination for Irish holidaymakers during summertime, thus, the Department of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning for pregnant women here who may be preparing to travel to the area in the immediate future.

An outbreak of the Zika virus has been confirmed in Miami, Florida, and while the virus is virtually harmless for most people, causing slight flu-like symptoms at worst, it has been associated with cases of the severely disabling condition microcephaly on infants born to mothers infected with the disease.

The department says that pregnant women should not travel to areas where the risk of contracting the virus, which is transmitted by mosquito bites, is high.
