People who are travelling through Dublin Airport over the coming days are advised to check with their airline whether their flight is going ahead due to the inclement weather.
Meteorologists have extended ice and freezing fog warnings for Ireland after dozens of flights to and from Dublin were cancelled.
Airlines cancelled at least 23 outbound and 27 return flights this morning.
It comes after 69 outbound and 74 inbound flights were cancelked last night.
Airport operator DAA said airlines were responsible for de-icing planes, which led to the delays.
His media manager, Graeme McQueen, said staff were stationed in airport terminals overnight to try to help passengers rebook.
“All surfaces at Dublin Airport including runways, aprons, stands, roads and walkways were pre-emptively treated through the night and are fully open and operational again today as they were for the entire day on Friday,” he said, reports RTE.
In a statement, Ryanair said: “We are experiencing only some very minor delays/cancellations to our flights from Dublin today as a result of the ongoing icy weather conditions,” reports RTE.
Travel journalist Eoghan Corry estimated up to 20,000 people would be affected by yesterday’s flight cancellations and long delays at Dublin Airport.
Speaking to RTÉ’s Brendan O’Connor, he said it’s been three years since the airport had to deal with something like yesterday’s disruption.
Most of today’s flight cancellations were announced last night, he added.
He also said there were some delays for flights departing from Shannon Airport today due to the freezing cold fog.
Meanwhile, Met Éireann has warned of potentially dangerous road conditions.
It has issued a yellow frost fog warning for Ireland, valid until noon tomorrow.
A yellow status low temperature and ice warning for Ireland goes into effect at 10pm this evening until midday tomorrow, with forecasters’ warning temperatures dropping to minus 5 degrees Celsius in some places.
A snow and ice warning expired in County Donegal at midday as the worst of the sleet showers were expected to hit coastal counties in the north-west.
In particular, concerns have been raised about the welfare of elderly people living alone, people who sleep poorly and asylum seekers housed in tents.
A snow and ice warning is in effect for counties Antrim and Down in Northern Ireland until noon tomorrow.
The Met Office said some disruption was likely due to frozen surfaces with snowfall in some places.
In the UK, Manchester Airport has temporarily closed both runways due to heavy snowfall.
In a tweet, the airport announced that it would resume operations soon. Passengers are advised to contact their airline for the most up-to-date flight information.
