Met Eireann forecast severe freezing fog with black ice creating dangerous driving conditions over the next 36 hours

Met Éireann has warned those who set out this morning that the freezing fog and icy stretches have created dangerous conditions on roads and trails across the country.

Separate warnings for yellow frost fog and ice are in effect nationwide until this afternoon.

Met Éireann said it will be very cold this morning, with frozen patches of icy fog remaining in some areas today. Many areas will be mainly dry with some spells of sunshine while winter showers in Ulster and Connacht will move south and become isolated this morning. The maximum temperatures are between 0 and 4°C.

It will be bitterly cold tonight and tomorrow morning with lows of -5C and colder still as fog and frost are likely to persist.

Met Éireann expects sub-zero temperatures to persist well into next week and possibly beyond next weekend.

The next few days are expected to be dry with little winter sun, but snow or sleet could accumulate in the northwest and along the east and west coasts.

Snow or sleet with icy patches of fog is possible across the country on Tuesday.

There is likely to be a cumulative effect as winter showers of sleet, hail and snow combine with freezing and freezing days to make conditions increasingly hazardous.

Yesterday there were also delays to Luas and Dart services in Dublin as snow and frost caused disruption.

People flying this weekend are encouraged to check the updated information before heading to the airport.

The travel chaos comes today as a blanket of freezing cold fog blankets many parts of the country, resulting in very poor visibility for motorists in affected areas.

Borough and city councils across the country have been sanding roads while Irish Rail is treating train tracks against ice. The traffic safety authority is calling on motorists to be careful this weekend.

Travelers should assume that the trails and roads are dangerous and black ice can form.
