Gardai have confirmed tonight that a man aged in his 60s has sadly died in Portarlington, Co. Laois after getting into trouble while swimming this afternoon.
It’s understood that the incident occurred around 3:30pm at Lake Derryounce.
The man was helped out of the water and taken by ambulance to Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise, but sadly he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Gardaí says that a case is being prepared for the coroner.
This is the third swimming-related death in the last week with people asked to take extreme care when out on the water.
