Three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison at Southwark Crown Court after being found guilty of four counts in connection with his bankruptcy five years ago.
The 54-year-old former world number one, who filed for bankruptcy in June 2017, was jailed for hiding £2.5million in assets and loans to avoid paying his debts.
He owed almost £50million to creditors on an unpaid loan of more than £3million on his property in Mallorca, Spain.
The incredible tennis star reportedly transferred nearly €427,000 (around £390,000) from his business account to others including those of his ex-wife Barbara and ex-wife Sharlely Becker.
The father-of-four also failed to explain his interest in a £1million estate in his hometown of Leimen, Germany, and hid an 825,000 euro (nearly £700,000) bank loan – of a value of 1 £.1million with interest – and stashed 75,000 shares in a £66,000 tech company.
Becker was convicted of four felonies under the Bankruptcy Act between June 21 and October 3, 2017 earlier this month.
He told the jury that his $50 million career earnings were eroded by a costly divorce from first wife Barbara, child support and “expensive lifestyle commitments.”
Becker had previously received a two-year suspended sentence of £1.7million (about £1.4million) in Germany in 2002 for tax evasion and attempted tax evasion.
