The former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev has died at age 91, Russian state media have reported tonight.
For many years, the final Soviet leader had been consigned to near political oblivion in Russia but nevertheless they are the media that broke the story to the world this evening.
Mr Gorbachev visited Ireland in 1989.
