A father and son from Co Laois died in a road accident while on a family holiday in Turkey.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it was aware of the case and provided consular assistance, reports RTE.

The man, who is in his 30s, and his son are understood to have died when the moped they were traveling on was involved in a collision in the tourist town of Alanya around 3.30pm local time.

They were on vacation with the dead boy’s 16-year-old brother.

Turkish authorities say the investigation is ongoing.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance. As with all consular cases, the department does not comment on the details of any specific case,” a spokesperson said, reports RTE.

Sinn FĂ©in TD Brian Stanley, who knows the family, said there is “shock and devastation” in the town of Portlaoise following the incident.

“They were due to fly home today as I understand it,” the Laois-Offaly TD said. “They live a few doors away from me,” reports RTE.

Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One, he said: “The ten-year-old would have been very popular here in the neighbourhood. The 16-year-old is okay and is still in Turkey,” adding that he has spoken to a parent of the man who died,” reports RTE.
