Workers who have been made redundant will soon be spared a sharp drop in their wages under plans that Social Protection Secretary Heather Humphreys will soon present to the government.

Wage-related benefits mean that workers who lose their jobs will receive a higher rate of National Insurance contributions, reports RTE.

Workers who lose their jobs under this measure can receive up to €450 weekly payments for six months.

Ireland is one of the few countries in the European Union that currently does not have such a system, reports RTE.

Minister Humphreys said work was well underway and he would present proposals to the government soon.

The minister said the move will “cushion the blow for people when they are laid off.”

However, there is still no exact date when the government will discuss this, anticipating the minister’s full program for the last government meeting before the holidays.

“It’s something that I’m very committed to, and I know that it makes a difference to people. What we are talking about here is people who have paid PRSI all their working life, suddenly finding themselves in an awful situation, while they don’t have a job,” Minister Humphrey’s said, reports RTE.
