According to authorities, a baby died when his father abandoned him in a car that was about 40 degrees Celsius, reports The Mirror.

The 1-yr-old baby was discovered dead in St. Petersburg, Florida, after his father left him in the car while he was at an appointment. He had been sitting in the car all day, according to investigators, when the father deviated from their regular schedule while travelling to a nearby daycare.

The father was taking care of his son on the morning of 6 November and thought he was in the creche after going to his appointment, according to a St. Petersburg Police Department spokeswoman, reports The Mirror.

After leaving his car in the intense heat to go pick up the youngster, he subsequently realised he had left the toddler inside as well.

The anonymous father reportedly left his appointment and returned home, where he began his job for the day under the mistaken impression that he had dropped off his son. He then proceeded to pick up the one-year-old from the creche at about five o’clock in the evening, according to the police spokeswoman, reports The Mirror.

According to St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman Yolanda Fernandez, the appointment was different from his typical schedule, and creche employees informed him that he never dropped off his youngster.

She said: “The father had the child in the morning and, it was not part of their routine, took the child to an appointment with him,” reports The Mirror.

She added: “The father went in to try to pick the child up, but the day-care said, ‘You never dropped him off,’ so at that point, then the father kind of realized what was going on and went back out to the car,” reports The Mirror.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene after the father realised his mistake, and he was pronounced dead.

The National Weather Service prediction at the time stated that temperatures had risen to a scorching 87 to 91 degrees Fahrenheit (30 to 32 degrees Celsius), with the heat index hitting 98 to 103 degrees Fahrenheit (36 to 39 degrees Celsius). According to the agency, the total was 10 degrees Celsius more than the expected temperatures for this season, reports The Mirror.
