Irish man (32) charged with murdering his own girlfriend in Spain – he could face 21 years in prison

An Irish man has been accused of killing his girlfriend in south Dublin in Spain, and if found guilty, he faces more than 20 years in prison, reports Breaking News.

Keith Byrne is facing a 21-yr jail term from Spanish public prosecutors for strangling Kirsty Ward, a mother of one, at their Costa Dorada vacation hotel.

The 32-yr-old was arrested 16 months ago and is still being held on remand.

As the specifics of the public prosecution case against him were made public for the first time on Tuesday, it was revealed that a Dublin man had been officially charged following a lengthy criminal investigation by a specialised gender violence investigative judge, reports Breaking News.

Hours after she left him after a fight in their hotel room, Byrne is accused in a five-page prosecution accusation filed with the Spanish courts of strangling Kirsty to death with a hair straightener power cable.

They said he couldn’t accept the end of their eight-month romance, so he acted with the purpose of killing the 36-year-old.

They claim that in order to keep his claimed victim from defending herself, the man, who had been residing in Duleek, County Meath, exploited his “superior strength” and the fact that she had no simple way out of their room at the four-star Magnolia Hotel in Salou, close to Tarragona on the east coast, reports Breaking News.

Shortly after being arrested for the July 2, 2023 murder, Byrne maintained his innocence, saying he discovered Kirsty in the doorway of their chamber, laying prone with a rope around her neck, and attempted to resuscitate her.

Public prosecutors from Tarragona shot down such allegations in their scathing indictment, detailing their version of events on the day of the murder, which they said happened following a breakdown in Kirsty and Byrne’s relationship.

The atmosphere of hostility and estrangement between the victim and the accused persisted throughout the week-long holiday that started on June 30, 2023, reports Breaking News.
