1000’s of Irish construction workers leaving for work in other countries where construction is not locked down

For those who remember the bank crash in 2008 and the resulting recession, you will also remember how skilled construction workers in highly sought after trades such as carpentry, electrical and plumbing left Ireland to find work in Australia, Canada and the UK.

According to Newstalk, history is repeating itself again.
Hundreds of skilled construction workers have left Ireland and moved to the UK and continental Europe leaving Ireland once again without the skilled workers needed for when the construction industry re-opens.

UK companies are offering incentives to Irish workers including free flights and accommodation with some workers offered double wages if they make the move abroad.

The Director General of the Construction Industry Federation said “While we are closed, we are probably doing about 800 houses less each week than we should be,”

Brian Coogan, Chief Executive of the Irish Plant Contractors Association, said the number of workers leaving Ireland is already, “running into the thousands.”
