Twelve people are confirmed dead after a boat sank off the coast of Turkey earlier today.
It is understood that the boat was carrying at least 31 migrants when it went down. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
Turkey is normally used as a ‘staging area’ for migrants intending to cross into mainland Europe.
No fewer than 555 people have died so far this year while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea, often in unseaworthy vessels.
