A man whom gardaĆ want to interview in connection with the murder of Jamey Carney in Killarney last week has been detained in Jordan.

GardaĆ investigating the killing had not requested his arrest or detention, but Garda headquarters has been notified of the development. Senior officers remain unclear about the reasons for his detention by Jordanian authorities.

The investigation into the murder of Ms Carney, which took place a week ago, is still at an early stage.

The 42-year-old US citizen, who was the mother of a 13-year-old girl, was discovered dead in an upstairs room at her rented home on the Muckross Road in Killarney last Tuesday. She had suffered a violent assault.

Detectives have identified a 28-year-old Jordanian man as a person of significant interest whom they wish to speak to.

He left Ireland shortly after the murder, taking a bus from Killarney in the early hours of last Tuesday morning to Dublin Airport and then flying to Turkey. From Istanbul he continued on to Jordan, where he has since been detained by local authorities. The Public Security Directorate is understood to have authorised his detention.

GardaĆ had not sought his arrest as part of their probe, and the exact reason for his detention remains unknown. Officers have been liaising with international law enforcement partners, including Europol, Interpol and US authorities, who have an interest in the case because Ms Carney was an American citizen.

She had moved to Ireland five years ago and had been living and working in Killarney, where she was well liked and respected in the community.

The Garda National Immigration Bureau has confirmed that the 28-yr-old had been in the UK before arriving in Ireland in 2024 and settling in Killarney.

GardaĆ have described the detention in Jordan as a matter for the authorities there and say they have no direct role in it.

Detectives continue to gather and assess evidence while following additional lines of inquiry. In due course they will submit a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who will decide whether charges should be brought and what those charges may be.

There is no extradition treaty between Jordan and Ireland. A person can only be extradited to face court proceedings in Ireland and cannot be returned solely for questioning.
