A mechanical issue on a LATAM Airlines flight from Sydney to Auckland forced the Boeing-built aircraft to dive sharply, resulting in the hospitalisation of twelve passengers, according to the airline and emergency services, reports RTE.
Following an unidentified “technical event” on aircraft LA800 over the Tasman Sea, at least one person is in a bad condition.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s occupants said that the aircraft swiftly dropped altitude, sending some of them hurtling towards the ceiling.
“People flew through the air because they weren’t wearing their seatbelts” a passenger told RNZ, a broadcaster in New Zealand, reports RTE.
“Some people got pretty injured. People were really scared as well,” the unidentified man said, his voice shaking, reports RTE.
A spokesperson for the Chile-based airline said “a technical event during the flight” had “caused a strong movement”.
“The plane landed at Auckland Airport as scheduled,” the airline said, adding it “deeply regrets any inconvenience and discomfort this situation may have caused”, reports RTE.
