A 12-year-old boy accused of hitting a 60-year-old “cpillar of her community” with her own car has been sent to safe accommodation by magistrates in England.

Marcia Grant died Wednesday night after being trapped under her Honda Accord outside her semi-detached house in the Greenhill area of Sheffield, which allegedly turned against her.

The boy, who could not be identified due to his age, appeared at Sheffield Youth Court this morning, charged with murdering a grandmother and possession of a sharp object.

He is accused of overturning the car on Mrs Grant, seriously injuring her, reports RTE.

The boy smiled at times as he looked around the courtroom and listened to a prosecutor discuss the charges against him with two magistrates.

The defendant stood in a glass-fronted dock next to two security officers during the 30-minute hearing, speaking to confirm his identity.

The young man was ordered to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday.

The boy sat for part of the hearing, looking out at the courtroom, which was packed with police, reporters, lawyers, and representatives from welfare and juvenile offender squads.

Alan Kelleher, the bench chairman, told him that he would be sent to secure custody of the youngsters until his next court hearing next week, reports RTE.

Earlier, prosecutor Gary Crothers outlined to prosecutors what had happened when the court debated the youth’s remand status.

Mrs Grant was pronounced dead in Wednesday’s crash outside her home in Hemper Lane, Greenhill.

The boy was charged with possession of a sharp object, a silver kitchen knife, which was allegedly found by police.

Mrs Grant’s family released a statement after her death which said: “Marcia was a warm, loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and a pillar of her community. Her loss has already sent shockwaves through all who knew her or was lucky enough to be included in her orbit.–We ask for privacy at this time while further investigations are under way and the family try to come to terms with this enormous loss,” reports RTE.

A number of floral tributes have been left just outside the property that had police tape across the entrance.

One message read: “I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful soul,” reports RTE.
