UNICEF have condemned the sentencing of a 13-yr-old boy to a decade in prison for blasphemy at an Islamic Sharia court in northern Nigeria.
According to CNN, the boy was convicted by a religious court in the predominately Muslim Kano State after he used bad language against Allah during an argument with his friend. Human rights activists have complained that blasphemy is not an official crime in Nigerian law, although Sharia courts exist in the vast African country’s Muslim areas.
The same court previously sentenced a studio assistant to death for blaspheming the Prophet Mohammad. Prison sentences in Nigeria are often combined with menial labour in poor conditions.
