One hundred and thirty three people are confirmed dead, and at least two hundred others were injured, after consuming tainted alcohol in India.

The incident happened in the Golaghat district in northeastern Assam state.

The victims drank bootleg alcohol locally known as “contry-made liquor”, which is a cheaper but riskier alternative to properly produced alcoholic drinks.

Events of this type are not uncommon in India. At least 80 people died in the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand states last February after drinking a homemade concoction, while no less than 168 peopled died for similar reasons in West Bengal in 2011.

Officials have arrested 10 people in relation to the latest incident.
