A 14-yr-old girl has been killed by a lion near Nairobi, according to a statement from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), reports RTE.
The fatal incident happened yesterday on a ranch located south of Nairobi National Park.
Another teenager reportedly witnessed the attack and raised the alarm, KWS said, reports RTE.
“KWS rangers and response teams were swiftly mobilised and traced bloodstains leading to the Mbagathi River, where the girl’s body was recovered with injuries on the lower back,” the conservation authority said.
“The lion was not sighted at the scene,” the statement added, reports RTE.
Authorities have set a trap for the lion, and teams have been deployed to search the area and implement additional safety precautions.
KWS also reported that a 54-year-old man was killed by an elephant in Nyeri County on Friday.
“KWS conveys its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and continues to work closely with local law enforcement and communities to enhance the safety of people living near protected wildlife areas,” the statement read, reports RTE.
The agency urged more funding for “human-wildlife conflict mitigation,” including the introduction of early warning systems and stronger collaboration with local communities.
