
The Department of the Environment stated that animal rescue organisation saved 43% (6,238 animals) of these dogs.
The amount of stray dogs being put into pounds dropped by under 1,000.
Last year, 2,896 dogs were put to sleep, a 620 decrease from 2013 figures.
A total number of 62 dogs died of natural causes.
Of the rest of the dogs, 3,129 dogs were re-homed and owners reclaimed 2,252 dogs.
However more actions are needed to be taken to decrease the amount of stray dogs in Ireland.
