A discussion has taken place in the Dail about the tragic case of a woman who died in Sligo after becoming addicted to over-the-counter medicines.

According to RTE, 39-year-old Laura Newell passed away after she took painkillers for a case of undiagnosed endometriosis.  The painkillers she took contained codeine and it is said that she was able to get them online.

In the Dail, Independent TD Marian Harkin noted that the drugs in question were “legal and easy to obtain” and that regulation concerned drugs that contain codeine should be reviewed.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said that while this was a problem that should be addressed, he did feel that the control of codeine is better now than it was in the past.
