26-yr-old man gets 8 years in prison for assaulting 9-month-old baby fracturing its skull in Cork

A 26-yr-old man is starting an 8 year prison sentence tonight after he was convicted of assaulting a 9-month-old baby.

The man, who cannot be named in fear of identifying the child in question, assaulted the baby on New Year’s Eve in 2016 at a location in Co. Cork.

It’s understood that the baby was the man’s partner and that the man was alone with the child at the time of the assault.

It was conveyed that the child suffered a near-death assault leaving its eye disfigured and fracturing and leaving a dent in its skull.

According to the Mirror, the baby and another child are now in foster care as its mother pleaded guilty to two counts of neglect in relation to her children. She’s currently serving a suspended sentence.

The 26-yr-old man was given a total of 12 years with 4 suspended. He would have been given a 10 year sentence but the Judge took into account his youth.

He imposed two consecutive two year sentences on neglect charges leaving the man to spend a total of 8 years behind bars with 4 suspended.
