
According to the latest figures from the CSO, a little over one-quarter (27%) of individuals who were given probation in 2020 committed another offence within a year, reports RTE.
This marks a two percentage point rise compared to the re-offending rate of 25% from 2019.
The data further reveals that more than a third (37%) of males under the age of 25 who received probation orders in 2020 re-offended within a year of their probation.
In contrast, 25% of young women committed another offence during the same timeframe, reports RTE.
There were also notable increases in the re-offending rates for those on probation for assault-related crimes (up by five percentage points), drug offences (up by four percentage points), and traffic violations (up by four percentage points) between 2019 and 2020.
Geographically, probationers from Cork and Kerry exhibited the highest re-offending rate at 31%, reports RTE.
In Dublin, where the number of probationers was highest (1,058 out of 3,478), 27% re-offended within a year.
In 2020, the majority of probation orders were issued for drug-related offences (605 out of 3,478), reports RTE.
Just over one-fifth (23%) of those offenders were convicted of a new crime within a year of being placed on probation.
Almost half (45%) of offenders were charged with at least one additional offence resulting in a conviction over a three-year period, from 2018 to 2020, reports RTE.
