A massive fire tore through a popular pub in northern Bangkok late Sunday night, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens more in one of the deadliest blazes in the Thai capital in recent years.
The blaze broke out around 11:57 p.m. local time (0457 GMT), at the Na Ladprao pub (also referred to as Rong Beer Na Ladprao) in the Chatuchak district. Firefighters from multiple stations battled the inferno for about 35 minutes before bringing it under control.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene and confirmed the death toll, stating that 27 bodies were recovered. He noted that many victims were found in the restrooms at the back of the pub, where they had apparently sought refuge from smoke and flames. Reports indicate 18 women and 9 men were among the dead.
Dozens more were injured, with some reports citing around 63 people hospitalized, several in critical condition.
Footage shared by first responders showed intense flames raging and thick smoke billowing from the entrance. A musician performing at the venue reportedly told officials he saw smoke coming from a circuit breaker near the stage, followed by a power outage and an explosion.
Authorities suspect an electrical fault, possibly involving alcohol vapors, as an initial cause, though a full investigation is underway. Narrow exits may have hindered escape, contributing to the high casualty count.
This incident is among Thailand’s worst pub and nightclub fires in recent memory. It draws comparisons to the 2009 Santika Club fire, which killed 66 people during New Year’s celebrations.
Rescue operations continue, and officials are working to identify all victims and support affected families. The tragedy has prompted renewed calls for stricter safety regulations in entertainment venues across the country.
