An Australian woman has suffered serious injuries after being struck by a humpback whale while swimming. The 29-year-old was on a group tour of Ningaloo Reef in western Australia when she received upper torso injuries and internal bleeding after being struck by the enormous mammal.
She was flown from the town of Exmouth to Perth for hospital treatment, with her condition currently understood to be serious but stable.
Popular with residents and tourists, Australia’s world-famous marine life can be dangerous. Last month a teenage surfer died after being attacked by a shark in New South Wales.
