A 36-yr-old thug has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for rape, false imprisonment, assault, making death threats and coercively controlling a woman after invading almost every aspect of his daily life over a six-week period.

According to RTE, Dean Ward, of Ballintlea, Hollyfort, Gorey, Co. Wexford, was found guilty by a jury on 12 counts earlier this year, on a charge that included three counts of rape and four counts of assault and one count of coercive control.

The victim is named as Sinéad O’Neill, from Killybegs, County Donegal. It’s understood that she was relieved at the outcome of the case and was speaking out to show others that support is available in they find themselves in a similar situation.

Judge Kerida Naidoo said Ward practically moved into the woman’s house after a first date and that he was able to manipulate her. It’s understood that the only way she escaped was when family and friends put a plan in place which allowed gardai to intervene and catch the thug.

Many people on social media are querying why he got such a long sentence compared to the garda thug Paul Moody who only got over 3 years earlier this week for what many believe to be crimes that are equally as bad.
